Sioux Empire Podcast 102 Is Sioux Falls Broken? with Matthew Livingston

The long twilight of the Legislative Session is over so the Sioux Empire Podcast Crew (Robert Mehling, Seth Glover, Natasha Estes) join up with friend of the show Matthew Livingston to tackle things closer to home.  We talk through the recent crime statistics released for Sioux Falls and the communities reaction. The economic news for Sioux Falls residents as bankruptcies rise. Thankfully we manage to spin it into a thing about exotic animal smuggling.  After that Robert threatens Matthew until he finally spends some time reflecting on listening to almost all of the first 100 episodes of The Sioux Empire Podcast and how far we’ve come. This episode is sponsored by Macabre Grimoire Podcast. Macabre Grimoire is a podcast of paranormal and mystery exploration. Psychic/medium Ari Show, magician Travis Nye, and historian Robert Mehling delve into the dark places where mysteries go unsolved, events go unexplained, and the line between legend and fact becomes obscured. Whether you’re a skeptic, believer or something in between, the Macabre Grimoire will change the way you see the world.  Coming May 1st! Learn more at MacabreGrimoire.com. The Sioux Empire Podcast hopes that one day Seth will accept that Curling is the one real game of kings.

Marty Jackley: My Plan to Strengthening South Dakota’s Economy

Today I released a new plan called the Hometown South Dakota Initiative aimed at strengthening the state’s economy. My vision for an even better South Dakota includes all communities in our state. As a promise to all citizens, no person or community gets left behind. My Hometown South Dakota Initiative is not about telling communities what they need to do better. Rather, it is about listening to communities and understanding what I can do as governor to help them grow and thrive. An effective leader must always listen before speaking. As your new governor, I will represent all communities.

The initiative proposes action in five areas that emphasize cooperation with local leadership:

1 Opportunity South Dakota: New and better jobs will be Jackley’s highest priority, and giving our youth the opportunity to stay here is the first step. By giving our young people the opportunities they need to remain in the state and aggressively recruiting employees in high-demand areas from outside the state, we can retain South Dakota’s best and close the worker shortage.

2

3 Fairness for Main Street: Our South Dakota businesses can compete with the best in the world, but they deserve a level playing field. Jackley is leading the fight for Main Street all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court with the South Dakota v. Wayfair case. A Supreme Court victory will bring millions in lost revenue back to the state.

4

5 Connecting South Dakota: We can unlock the incredible economic potential of all our communities by connecting our towns with the high-speed internet that the 21st century economy requires. By partnering with institutions like SDSM&T, SDSU, and DSU that are developing cutting edge technologies in this space, we will modernize four areas of critical technological infrastructure: broadband access, education, telemedicine, and precision agriculture.

6

7 Governor’s Economic Roundtables: Strengthening our economy and creating better jobs requires a team effort from the state, local governments, educational institutions, and the private sector. In order to build a stronger partnership with communities, Jackley will commit to three annual roundtables: one each for mayors, county leaders, and businesses.

8

9 Revitalizing Housing and Infrastructure: During Jackley’s listening tours across the state, he has consistently heard about the need for a renewed focus on infrastructure and affordable housing. Both are vital components of growing our workforce, and Jackley will be a steadfast partner to local governments that are working with limited resources to build the roads, bridges, and housing units our citizens need to usher in a new era of economic growth.

The policy initiative can be read in its entirety here: https://www.martyjackley.com/hometown-south-dakota-initiative/

I hope you like our plan and please keep sending me your ideas for how we can make South Dakota even better.

This podcast contains adult content, listener discretion advised.

We’re back baby!  The Sioux Empire Podcast welcomes Sioux Falls Comedian Skyler Bolks to our 2018 season premiere.  We try to catch you up on the stories we missed during the break in December, but mostly get hung up on the seamen center story.  Aside from Rob describing stud testing bulls in way, way too much detail the crew also checks up on the Copper lounge drama in Sioux Falls, the monster house case (We’ve all seen the claymation documentary about), and state rep Steven Haugaard (R- Sioux Falls) and his condom fetish.  This episode is brought to you by Sioux Falls Sno Jam Comedy Festival celebrating comedy and…Snow! That’s right there is no other comedy festival like it. Thirty comedians from around the country will be traveling to Sioux Falls, SD to perform in various venues across the city. Over the course of three days they will perform in both stand up and themed showcases, not only testing their comedy wits but their endurance to the cold. All the while supporting a good cause. Net proceeds will benefit the Special Olympics of South Dakota.  Look out 2018; The Sioux Empire Podcast is back!
