SEP060 – Mesmerized with Zstonish Part 1

This week the Sioux Empire Zoo Crew (Robert Mehling, Seth Glover, Emily Gheorghiu and Natasha Estes) fall into a hole of holes.  Holes.  Rob can’t stop saying holes.  Thankfully comedy hypnotist and magician Zstonish (Zac Tenneboe) was happy hypnotize Rob so that he could stop saying the word holes.  Join this eclectic cast as we use the Oscars as an excuse to talk about our all-time favorite movies.  He also incepted Rob into making favorite TV shows of all time a topic without it being on the show notes.  Damn, he’s good.  This week’s music spotlight is T.H.E. Honoroll with song “Drift Away” Featuring Pope Adrian Bless.  This episode is sponsored by SiouxperCon 2017: The Sioux Empire Strikes Back.  SiouxperCon is a fan convention celebrating several mediums: including comic books, anime, board games, video games, science fiction, and fantasy. A non-profit event, SiouxperCon is dedicated to promoting literacy and valuable life skills in an inclusive and friendly environment. Net proceeds from the convention will benefit REACH Literacy and the JY6 Foundation.  Zstonish was unable to save the tea he spilled during The Sioux Empire Podcast, for there are some things that are beyond even his magics.

SEP044 – Poekhon Go!

Poekhon Go!  That’s right kids! (note this podcast is NOT for kids) This week the Sioux Empire Podcast crew (Robert Mehling, Seth Glover, Natasha Estes, and Emily Gheorghiu) welcome YouTube’s Pokehon (Joseph J Ektnitphong) to the show.  We talk about every random story that has happened in the last two weeks in a hurricane of “stream of consciousness” craziness (as is our way).  Stories include: “offensive” urinals at the new PAve restaurant in Sioux Falls, The Standing Rock Sioux vs. “The Black Snake” aka the Dakota Access Pipeline, and how reverse parking on Main Avenue in Sioux Falls is trying to kill us all.  In the second half, we cover the batshit insane anti-immigrant meeting in Aberdeen.  There we learn just how deep the racist rabbit hole goes (hint: get out your conspiracy theory bingo cards and tin foil hats).  We also get an update from Pokehon on next year’s SiouxperCon!  If you need us, The Sioux Empire Podcast is going to: “be under cover, that’s where you’re gonna be.”

This week’s episode is sponsored by PremonitionLive:

Troubled American

The United States of America has always had wounds, but we rarely exposed them and always stood tall. Our pride says it all in the Star Spangle Banner.

“O say can you see, by the dawn’s early light, what so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming, Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight, O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?”

The Star Spangle Banner is an exquisite piece of American history. As an American, I am proud reading the Star Spangle Banner. I’m also proud of our American roots that embedded into the soils of this great nation, but America is all shook up.

More people every day are becoming apprehensive about the state of the American nation. The past few months have felt like all hell has broken loose. A lot has happened since the beginning of May 2016. I feel like we are letting our issues tear our nation down. We face many problems in western civilization.  These problems as a whole now affect our everyday life. America has a bad hand of cards; we fear Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton as our next president. Neither candidate will serve as a good president. We the people have to choose the less problematic of the worse.

Political madhouse aside, there are a lot of domestic problems in our country. Racism, sexism, a broken justice system, debt, and guns are a few of many serious issues right here at home. President Obama has been blacklisting some critical topics and responding poorly to others. Our congress, justice system, and the government in general seem to be failing the American people on one issue after another. How long before the American people know that the government will be accountable its actions? I am a troubled American wondering why our government can’t represent us fairly. I feel upset when my government hides the truth and protects unlawful behavior of politicians and crooked cops. I am a concerned as the FBI release criminal politicians AND ALLOW them to continue to run for president. I became furious when police gunned down Alton Sterling and Philando Castile for no reason.

It doesn’t seem like a lot of progress has been going on in Congress. People are protesting in outrage, and some are lashing out in violence while others sit in silence. Meanwhile, other people shout for justice and peace holding their loved ones in the street. To turn on the news is heart-wrenching because of all misery people are enduring. To enjoy social media is almost impossible with sickening stories flooding the news feed. It is hard to be a trusting citizen in today’s America, and I am not even sure what is real coming from the media let alone our government. As an American, I would like to ask my government how I could ever feel safe again.

Shoot your neighbor’s home? Blame Obama…?

So by now you probably have seen something about Darren Kyle Zafft, the Sioux Falls 29 year old who is being held on $1 million dollars cash bond.  (If not read about it at the Argus Leader)   When ATF and other law enforcement raided his Sioux Falls apartment they found 114 guns, including more than a dozen illegally modified rifles and shotguns, handmade silencers, multiple grenades, about 10,000 rounds of ammunition.  The raid was kicked off when a neighbor discovered a hole in his wall and later found a slug in a mattress.

Somehow none of that is the crazy part of the story.  When local media arrived at the scene friday morning according to the Argus Leader:

A man who identified himself as Zafft’s uncle but would not give his name expressed frustration about the charges.

“They aren’t going after criminals; they’re going after guns. I blame Obama for this,” the man said.

I myself am very pro second amendment and think this guy deserves a fair trial since owning a lot of guns in america is very much legal.  (We’ll let a court of law address the other issues like illegally modified weapons and explosives)  But if it is true that this man (possibly accidentally) shot his neighbor’s home, where would his uncle get the idea that it’s Obama’s fault?  It is such a lazy fad on the internet to blame the president for everything.  This phenomenon is not new.  I remember the Bush years clearly where the left’s blame Bush fever got so bad they were making movies where they fantasized about his assassination (That Actually happened).

In recent years however, it seems like the habit of re-posting often long disproven memes on social media just to parrot that you don’t like the president(or some other politician) has gotten out of control.  What a lot of people do, and I have been told by friends on boths sides to do myself, is to simply block the posts or unfriend/unfollow people.  The only problem is I see everyone doing that and separating ourselves off into little isolated pockets of information.  Then each ideological camp breaks off and creates it’s own version of truth.
When that happens how do we know when we’ve become completely detached from reality and are trapped in our own ideological bubble?  Probably when we start blaming Barack Obama for a shot up apartment in Sioux Falls.

How much did Obama know? We’ve been lied to about ISIS

The scandal surrounding US intelligence reports on ISIS just hit President Barack Obama’s inner circle.

James Clapper, America’s top spy, is reportedly in “frequent and unusual contact” with the military officer who is suspected of allowing US reports on ISIS to be altered to fit the administration’s official line.

Goodbye McKinley, Hello Denali

President Obama says he’s changing the name of the tallest mountain in North America from Mount McKinley to Denali.

He’s giving the mountain its traditional Alaska Native name on the eve of a historic presidential visit to Alaska.

What do you think?  Is this cool or should he leave it be?

SEP014 – Why die on Mars?

Why die on mars? That was the question no one was asking but now they are, and also laughing. This week the Sioux Empire Podcast takes a closer look at the Governor’s Office of Economic Development’s new ad campaign “Why die on mars when you can live in South Dakota.” We have exclusive unused audio from the campaign as well as reaction from the Martian ambassador himself. We think it’s a he. To be honest we’re not entirely sure. Anyway, we also bring you an important PSA for severe weather season, a dramatic reading for our Facebook comments, and we play the most South Dakota game of all. The Sioux Empire Podcast in no way endorses gambling but, oh holy shit we won money!!!

SEP013 – Ok, Obama probably doesn’t hate South Dakota.

We’re baaaaack…  In the Season 2 premier, team Unicorn… I mean team Sioux Empire Podcast (Robert Mehling, Seth Glover, and Amanda Mehling) discuss current events in South Dakota and the Nation… And then lose interest halfway through because apparently three grown adults cannot record a podcast while there is a giant stuffed unicorn in the studio…  And yes we talk about the vote Yes/No school start date controversy so sharpen your pitchforks.  This week’s local music highlight is Denham McDermott with his song Rainy Days ft Kid God.  His #Structureless mixtape is out now.  Learn more at Soundcloud @ Denham_music, Twitter @Denham_music, and Instagram @Denham_music.  This week’s attempt at a game is “Game of Game of Thrones.”  I wish I could say the Unicorn put up a good fight and we left it alone, but the Sioux Empire Podcast is no fairy tale place.
