Sioux Empire Podcast 092 Happy New Year 2018 With Skyler Bolks

This podcast contains adult content, listener discretion advised.

We’re back baby!  The Sioux Empire Podcast welcomes Sioux Falls Comedian Skyler Bolks to our 2018 season premiere.  We try to catch you up on the stories we missed during the break in December, but mostly get hung up on the seamen center story.  Aside from Rob describing stud testing bulls in way, way too much detail the crew also checks up on the Copper lounge drama in Sioux Falls, the monster house case (We’ve all seen the claymation documentary about), and state rep Steven Haugaard (R- Sioux Falls) and his condom fetish.  This episode is brought to you by Sioux Falls Sno Jam Comedy Festival celebrating comedy and…Snow! That’s right there is no other comedy festival like it. Thirty comedians from around the country will be traveling to Sioux Falls, SD to perform in various venues across the city. Over the course of three days they will perform in both stand up and themed showcases, not only testing their comedy wits but their endurance to the cold. All the while supporting a good cause. Net proceeds will benefit the Special Olympics of South Dakota.  Look out 2018; The Sioux Empire Podcast is back!

Wacko’s Comedy Club owner Kellen Marson is back on the podcast to tell Robert Mehling and Seth Glover how fun/scary that job is.  We talk about the challenges of the comedy industry and creative ways Kellen has worked to meet the challenges.  We also hear a little bit about how hypnosis changed his life and his military service.  This week’s episode is brought to you by The Sioux Empire Podcast Network, specifically “The Art of Bombing” podcast with Dan Bublitz Jr.  Also, Chaos Reigns podcast with Ari Show and Dominic Wieneke.  Now if you’ll excuse us The Sioux Empire Podcast needs to go win back its money playing Pai Gow on Freemont Street (This could take awhile).

This week The Sioux Empire Podcast crew (Robert Mehling and Seth Glover) will commit random crimes so they can go to jail for the free iPads.  Fortunately, Comedy Hypnotist and Wacko’s Comedy Club Owner Kellen Marson was on hand to talk them out of it.  That, and the whole being threatened with forced catheterization thing were enough to talk them down.  We also discuss Xennials, South Dakota GOP chairman Dan Lederman’s defense of Gerrymandering, and Couch Everett Gebhart of Washington High gets permanently benched.  Kellen Marson also uses this appearance on the podcast to announce his candidacy for governor of South Dakota!  This week’s episode is brought to you by The Sioux Empire Podcast Network, specifically “The Art of Bombing” podcast with Dan Bublitz Jr.  Also, Chaos Reigns podcast with Ari Show and Dominic Wieneke. The Sioux Empire Podcast has a zero tolerance policy for school zero tolerance policies.

Comedian Carlos Mencia At Wacko’s Comedy Club July 14th – 15th

Get your Tickets at Wacko’s Comedy Club here.

Mencia began his career doing stand-up on amateur night at the world renowned comedy club, Laugh Factory. He later showcased at The Comedy Store and became a regular, performing nightly. After he found success on the L.A comedy circuit, Mencia was named “International Comedy Grand Champion” from Buscando Estrellas (the Latino version of Star Search). This led to appearances on “In Living Color,” “The Arsenio Hall Show,” “Moesha” and “An Evening at the Improv.”

Mencia comes from a humble background, born in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, the 17th of 18 children. His parents sent him to the United States when he was about three months old, where he was raised in the Maravilla Projects in Los Angeles, California by his aunt and uncle. In his early teens, Mencia moved back to Honduras because his family wanted him to avoid the destructive gang culture of East Los Angeles. When Mencia later returned to Los Angeles, he showed such educational prowess that he was immediately promoted to the tenth grade. Soon after, he successfully graduated from Garfield High School.

Mencia continued his journey up the comedy ladder by headlining “The Three Amigos” tour with Freddy Soto and Pablo Francisco in 2002, which sold out in record time around the United States. He was also featured in the independent films, “Outta Time” and “29 Palms” and starred in guest spots on “The Shield” and “The Bernie Mac Show,” among others. In 2002, he received a CableACE Award nomination for Best Stand-Up Comedy Special for his HBO special. That same year, “Mind of Mencia” went into development. The show was an instant hit and after the first season, Comedy Central signed Mencia back for his own original stand-up special, “Carlos Mencia: No Strings Attached.” The special was the first Comedy Central Stand-up Special DVD to achieve Platinum sales status.

“Mind of Mencia” debuted on Comedy Central in early 2005. It became one of the strongest shows in the network’s history, averaging about 1.5 million total viewers. “Mind of Mencia” was executive produced by Carlos Mencia and Robert Morton (“Late Night with David Letterman”).

Mencia starred opposite Ben Stiller and Michelle Monaghan in the Farrelly Brothers’ hit feature film, THE HEARTBREAK KID (DreamWorks And in the family comedy OUR FAMILY WEDDING (FOX Searchlight) alongside America Ferrara and Forrest Whitaker.

In 2007, Mencia embarked on a USO Tour to the Persian Gulf to entertain the troops serving overseas. For his 2008 trip, Mencia visited Kuwait to host “Operation MySpace,” an exclusive concert for American Troops in the Middle East alongside Jessica Simpson and The Pussycat Dolls. The special aired on FX in April 2008. Mencia’s 2009 USO tour had stops in Turkey, Kirkuk, Baghdad, Qatar, Afghanistan, and many other countries.

Most recently, Mencia has gone back to his comedic roots, performing at a number of comedy venues – allowing him to share his newest material with a more intimate audience. His current tour, called the “C 4 Urself Tour,” has been making stops all around the country, performing to eager audiences. Carlos Mencia presently lives in Los Angeles.

Sioux Empire Tonight: Sioux Falls Gets It’s Own Late Night Talk Show

Sioux Falls officially has it’s own Late Night style talk show.  Sioux Empire Tonight is filmed in front of a live studio audience out at Wacko’s Comedy Club.  It features a who’s who of the local comedy scene including the clown prince of Sioux Falls Comedy himself Zac Dresch as host and master of ceremonies.  The Sioux Fall’s Comedy name-dropping doesn’t stop there either.  Dan Bublitz Jr. is a director, executive producer, and makes an appearance as the on-screen character Hipster Hipster Dan.  Also executive producing is the owner of Wacko’s Comedy Club Kellen Marson (Shameless Plug, Kellen will be our guest on this week’s episode of The Sioux Empire Podcast).

This episode has Comedian Nathan Hoffman, Owners of Total Drag Records Dan Nissen and Liz Nissen, and our network’s own Gabriel Night Shield.

So the real question is, is it good?  The answer is it’s awesome.  I would absolutely recommend you attend one of the free tapings of the show.  So much fun and the beer sales help fund the show.  This first video has some undeniably serious audio issues but I have a feeling they will have a lot of those resolved as we move into the next episode.

I believe the next live taping is Sunday July 16th at 7 PM at Wacko’s Comedy Club.  Guest will include Timmy Williams.

A lot of really wonderful and talented people are woking on this project, I apologize if I miss anyone.

SEP065 – April Fools with Zach Dresch

Greetings April Fools!  This week the regular cast of the podcast (Robert Mehling, Corbin Brooks, and Travis Nye) sit down to talk with comedian Zach Dresch.  We try to decide who is the more narcissistic generation, the Baby Boomers or Millennials?  We also talk about flat earther Brannon Howse’s ignorance tour coming to Sioux Falls, Facebook trolling bigots, and adoption discrimination.  This week’s music spotlight is Zach Dresch himself or rather his band “The Disarmed” and the single “Turn Out The Lights” from their upcoming album “Another Fleeting Reason.”  This episode is sponsored by SiouxperCon 2017: The Sioux Empire Strikes Back.  SiouxperCon is a fan convention celebrating several mediums: including comic books, anime, board games, video games, science fiction, and fantasy. A non-profit event, SiouxperCon is dedicated to promoting literacy and valuable life skills in an inclusive and friendly environment. Net proceeds from the convention will benefit REACH Literacy and the JY6 Foundation.  The Sioux Empire Podcast will never submit to Shakira Law!  Our hips can’t take that.

SEP058 – Rise of the Sioux Fallsians with Clinton Brown Part 1

It’s big crew in a little apartment night on The Sioux Empire Podcast as your full Zoo Crew (Robert Mehling, Emily Gheorghiu, Natasha Estes, and Seth Glover) welcome entrepreneurship Jedi Master Clinton Brown, owner of the Bakery Co-Working space of Sioux Falls. Brown gives the crew a masters course in business and journalism, and we teach him it’s ok to hug. The guest train doesn’t stop there, though, this episode also features cameos from familiar friends of the show like magician Travis Nye and phantom stranger Neil Stach. We also discuss the need for people in Sioux Falls and South Dakota to broaden their horizons. Brown talks a little bit about small town news vs. real news, as well as digs into some of the myths we believe in this area about issues like human trafficking. You know, lighthearted stuff like that. This week’s local music spotlight is local artist Denham McDermott with the song “Stay.” This episode is sponsored by SiouxperCon 2017: The Sioux Empire Strikes Back. The Sioux Empire Podcast still thinks Clinton Brown needs a hug.
