The Champions are coming.  In fact they are already dominating Kickstarter!  This week the Champions of The Sioux Empire Podcast Robert Mehling, Natasha Estes, and Seth Glover have a jam packed episode for you.  We interview Dylan Jacobson, the local artist behind the independent comic book that has raised over $2000 in it’s first 48 hours on Kickstarter.  Robert interviews Briggs Warren, the 18 year old candidate for Sioux Falls City Council in the northwest district.  The group discusses Senator Mike Rounds and his comments about Donald Trump and the Klu Klux Klan.  Our local music spotlight this week is the premier of a new song Die from local act Angie Hosh from the upcoming album Solutions (Out April 28th).  We hope you enjoy this episode of the podcast locals are calling “quirky but harmless.”

Annual Razzie Awards!

All five films up for Worst Picture at this year’s 36th Annual Razzie Awards are big budget/high profile productions that have no excuse for being among the year’s “berry” worst. And 2015’s acting contenders include popular stars like Johnny Depp, Channing Tatum, and Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting, previous Oscar winners Gwyneth Paltrow, Eddie Redmayne and Julianne Moore, and such Razzie Repeat Offenders as Adam Sandler, Jennifer Lopez and Katherine Heigl.

The winners were announced last night, with Fifty Shades of Grey and Fantastic Four tying for Worst Picture. The choices for Worst Picture include Fifty Shades of Grey (2015’s “Most Successful Bad Movie”), Fantastic Four (a nearly instant remake that flopped with both critics and movie-goers), Jupiter Ascending (the latest sci-fi fiasco from Andy Wachowski & Lana Wachowski), Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 (a box office hit despite its 95% negative rating at Rotten Tomatoes) and Adam Sandler’s latest excuse for a movie, the 80’s video game-themed Pixels.

Fifty Shades of Grey took home the most awards of the night, winning five Razzies. For this year’s 9 regular Razzie categories, contenders and “winners” are determined by seeking online votes from over 900 Voting Razzie Members throughout 47 U.S. states and 21 foreign countries. For the 10th category, The Razzie Redeemer Award, (which acknowledges past Razzie “winners” who’ve gone on to do better work) the honoree will be decided by a public vote of users at popular movie review website Rotten Tomatoes.

The Razzies were created in 1980 as the comical counterpoint to Tinsel Town’s annual glut of self congratulatory awards by John Wilson, author of The Official Razzie Movie Guide and Everything I Know I Learned At The Movies.

Photos from the #HoldThemAccountable rally on Saturday February 20th

Approximately 100 protesters marched on the Sioux Falls downtown Holiday Inn before the Chamber’s legislative coffee on Saturday February 20th to protest HB1008 (The transgender bathroom bill) and other issues such as teacher pay.

SEP029- Trans-Legislative Coffee

With tensions running high and all eyes in the national media watching South Dakota to see if the Governor will sign or veto the transgender bathroom bill (or HB 1008), local legislators for the Sioux Falls area (Isaac Latterell, Steven Westra, Mark Mickelson, Karen Soli, Larry Zikmund, Tom Holmes, Phyllis Heineman, Angie Buhl O’Donnell and Deb Soholt) gave this important issue the time it deserved at the Sioux Falls Chamber’s Legislative Coffee….  10 minutes, at the end of the meeting.  So to give this and other topics the extended coverage they deserve (and by coverage of course we mean sarcastic and vulgar commentary) The Sioux Empire Podcast is here to help.  Robert, Seth, and Natasha talk to the protesters from the rally before the coffee and we try to talk to a representative after the coffee.  It’s our first full team coverage in the field episode, so of course it has way more swearing than ever before.  The team learns the lesson that they didn’t know who represents them and now that they do, they don’t like them (Most of them).  The worst part is in the end… The Sioux Empire Podcast crew didn’t even get a cup of coffee out of the deal.

SEP028- We’re Going to SiouxperCon!

Greetings citizens!  This week the heroes of the Sioux Empire Podcast (Robert Mehling, Natasha Estes, and Seth Glover) announce that they will be attending SiouxperCon April 15th, 16th, and 17th.  We’re Siouxper excited (See what we did there?) and hope you’ll come see us there.  In the meantime we fight the forces of darkness or as you may know them the South Dakota state legislature as they attempt to keep passing even stupider laws.  This week’s episode features local music from Young Poet and Library Advocate.  So what should the members of the Sioux Empire Podcast crew cosplay as at SiouxperCon?  Let us know at  Learn more about SiouxperCon at:

SEP027- South Dakota Potty Police

The South Dakota State legislature is in session and you think they would be taking care of our crumbling infrastructure and teacher pay, you would be wrong… Ok, if I’m being honest this week’s episode is a case study on how not to set up a podcast about the legislative session.  Our hosts Robert Mehling, Seth Glover and Natasha Estes did one story about the Playboy Mansion and the sex innuendo jokes derailed most of our other stories.  We try to talk about tourism, small towns, and various news out of Pierre from the legislature but… (He he, he said butt)  Yeah.  That was this episode.  The triumphant return of our local music spotlight was on point though, as we featured the band Remember to Breathe with their song “Set In Motion” and local artist Beno Terzic with the song “Autumn.”  No Playboy Bunnies were harmed in the making of this episode, but I can’t say the same for our hearts and minds.

SEP026- Powerball Poverty Party!

This week Robert, Natasha, and Seth are having a party!  A poverty party!  Let’s all dream about what it would have been like if we had won the Powerball (hint it involves yarn).  We also interview Jeremy Menning with Growing Hartford about the strange happenings at the Hartford city council.  We also talk some sports ball, selling cocaine online in Rapid City, and the SD used car dealer who is holding the LA Ram’s website hostage.  This episode is also the premiere of our newest segment, Robnan: Meme Slayer.  The Sioux Empire Podcast would like to apologize in advance for getting the Trump theme song stuck in your head.

SEP025- Chasing the Tea Storm Chasers

That’s right folks, we survived 2015 somehow.  So on to 2016 with an exciting new season, with new stories and a new co-host!  Robert Mehling and Seth Glover welcome their new co-host Natasha Estes who we somehow tricked into joining our motley podcast crew. But first, we look back and the top baby names and TV shows of 2015.  We also talk about what an “Ammosexual” is and for some reason (that was actually in the news) dead puppies, and learnding to write good at the University of South Dakota.  Then, Rob makes his first try at doing some honest to God investigative journalism about the local organization known as The Tea Storm Chasers.  A report that sadly leaves us with more questions than answers.  Not as sad as, you know, dead puppies… Happy New Year?…
