Gov. Daugaard Signs Propane Executive Order

PIERRE, S.D. – Gov. Dennis Daugaard this morning signed an executive order to allow expedited commercial delivery of propane products to assist regions of the state that are experiencing low inventories and outages.

“Our ag producers need to have access to propane in order to carry on normal operations,” Gov. Daugaard said. “This order gives companies that transport propane some leeway so they can deliver products in a speedier manner.”

The Governor’s order declares a state of emergency and exempts delivery of propane from federal motor carrier regulations on drivers’ hours of service statewide.

Although hours of service have been temporarily suspended for commercial deliveries, companies may not require or allow fatigued drivers to make deliveries, Gov. Daugaard said.

The executive order expires at midnight Nov. 20, 2017.

South Dakota Launches State Response Website SDResponse.gov

PIERRE, S.D. – Gov. Dennis Daugaard today announced the launch of SDResponse.gov to provide the public with real-time information during severe weather and disaster situations.

The Governor encourages South Dakotans to utilize the new website in times of emergency and follow the corresponding @SoDakResponds Twitter and Facebook accounts.

“South Dakotans need to have access to up-to-date information in order to make the best decisions during times of disaster and inclement weather. With that intent in mind, we created SDResponse.gov to be a one-stop public safety response site just in time for the winter season,” Gov. Daugaard said.

SDResponse.gov houses material from multiple state agencies and outside response entities. The website currently includes information on drought, fire and winter weather, and the tabs will rotate depending upon the season and what is occurring in the state.

The website also includes an archive where information from emergencies dating back to 2011 are stored. The archive contains sections on the 2011 flood, Winter Storm Atlas, Wessington Springs and Delmont tornadoes, and the Big Sioux River flood in 2014 where photos, press releases, executive orders, and letters are available.

“We wanted to provide a historical component to SDResponse.gov as well by making documents and images from past disasters readily available,” said Gov. Daugaard. “We need to remember the lessons we’ve learned from these events and the many ways in which South Dakotans have persevered.”

Not Too Early to Start Preparing For Winter Weather

PIERRE, S.D. – It certainly has not seemed like winter yet, but officials of the South Dakota Office of Emergency Management (OEM) say that doesn’t mean winter season won’t eventually arrive.

Wednesday, Oct. 25, is Winter Weather Awareness Day in South Dakota. The day serves as a reminder that, sooner or later, winter weather will be here.

“We always know that winter weather can occur at any time, but we just don’t know when,” says Tina Titze, director of the Office of Emergency Management. “This is a good time, especially on Wednesday, to start planning now for the cold temperatures and snow. By preparing now, you can be ready if you have to deal with power outages, blocked roads and being forced to stay at home for several days.”

Among the preparation tips OEM suggests are:

*** Monitor local weather forecasts when winter storms are approaching;

*** Make sure you have enough supplies, including food, prescription medication, and batteries, if you get stranded at home;

*** When traveling during the winter, make sure you have a winter survival kit in your vehicle and check road conditions before you leave.

For more on making winter weather preparations, check out the new OEM winter weather guide at http://bready.sd.gov/seasonal/seasonal.aspx.

OEM’s mascot Tommy the Turtle is featured in a book for children regarding winter preparedness. It is available at http://bready.sd.gov/docs/Winter%20Weather%20Book.pdf.
